Temporary 10 Minute Email #vmvwiki

Webmail accounts

  • Temporary 10 Minute Email ( http://10minutemail.com )

    • If you ever need a temporary email address, maybe for a coupon code for a one-time purchase (Then they fill your inbox with unwanted offers and other advertising). Or, maybe just to test your own email setup is working ok. With 10 Minute Mail you get a temporary email address that lasts for 10 minutes or you can keep adding another 10 minutes if the email you are expecting is late.

    • When you arrive at the site you’ll be automatically loaded into your mailbox. There’s no need to register or anything like that. Instead, copy the e-mail address they’ve provided for you and use it. If you need to check an e-mail for whatever you signed up for it will come directly to the page you’re on, in the message section near the bottom of the page.

Apple iOS8 police-proof? but don't forget your pwd #vmvwiki

In an effort to protect the private communications of iPhone and iPad users, Apple said on Wednesday its latest mobile operating system, the iOS8, has built-in encryption features that does not allow anybody – even police with search warrants – from accessing data stored on handheld devices.

However, the downside is that according to Apple officials, users who forget their pass codes with the new iOS 8 operating system will not be able to recover them by contacting the company

Yahoo threatened with $ trillion fine over user data access #vmvwiki

I like that the cost of the Star Wars Death Star is shown on the graph.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11326405

News coverage of the case, for which documents were unsealed last week, reported the proposed fines as $250,000 a day. But there was also a clause that called for a doubling of the amount each week if Yahoo refused to comply. It was more than enough to bankrupt the company after just a few months.

At the six-month mark, the doubling fine would have equaled $117 trillion. Depending on the calculation you use, the fine would have exceeded the total dollar value of the entire Earth (including economic assets and the physical value of the planet itself) in either the eighth or ninth month.

How a mayor’s quest to unmask a foul-mouthed Twitter user blew up in his face

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/05/how-a-mayors-quest-to-unmask-a-foul-mouthed-twitter-user-blew-up-in-his-face/

"The warrant asked for "user connection logs for each connection for Twitter account @peoriamayor," including dates and times, data transfer volume, IP addresses, and subscriber information, including the e-mail address used to open the account."

"The case serves as a reminder of the true power of the state. Thanks to the Internet, even local cops can now track down random Twitter miscreants without leaving the office—something that would have been impossible in the days of anonymous handbills plastered to brick walls around town. And those local cops can get as much information about your life as even the FBI could glean in a major felony investigation."

Questions?
*What is twitter's responsibility here? They claim it is ok to create a parody account. Was this indeed one? How would you feel if someone created a parody account about you and what action would you take? How far could a parody account account be taken before you would want action taken (what are your boundaries)?

Major internet security bug explained: OpenSSL Heartbleed #vmvwiki

The cryptography expert Bruce Schneier, who has been writing about computer security for more than fifteen years, is not given to panic or hyperbole. So when he writes, of the “catastrophic bug” known as Heartbleed, “On the scale of 1 to 10, this is an 11,” it’s safe to conclude that the Internet has a serious problem. The bug, which was announced on Tuesday—complete with an explanatory Web site and a bleeding-heart logo—is a vulnerability in a widely used piece of encryption software called OpenSSL.

iPhone vanishing motel wifi MBs #vmvwiki #vmvdlt

A problem I encountered years ago with Windows updates now happens on the iDevices, where you purchase wifi MBs at a motel/hotel and they vanish incredibly fast.

With the iDevices (iPad, iPhone) by default auto updating when connected to wifi you'll find that an update flurry can suck all the bandwidth you have just purchased. So before you activate the purchased MBs dive into settings, scroll to iTunes and App Store and under Automatic Updates turn them all off.

Like in the old days before the last iOS Update you'll get the badge on the App Store icon showing updates are available and you can manually update the ones you want to, or wait until you're back to your wifi and turn the auto updates back on.

Recently Purchased 150mb at a motel and it disappeared within 1/2 hr of connecting.
